Abstract
964,458. Aerials. TELEFUNKEN PATENTVERWERTUNGS G.m.b.H. Aug. 21, 1962 [Aug. 23, 1961], No. 32001/62. Heading H4A. A surface aerial comprises a narrow portion 3 to which is connected a strip line or a coaxial feeder, a bent-over portion 2 whose width gradually increases so as to maintain the characteristic impedance of the aerial constant over the operating frequency band and which terminates in a rounded-off portion as shown, or in a plurality of tapering fingers (not shown), so as to provide a reflection-less termination. The aerial is made from sheet metal or from a web of closely spaced wires. If only a single aerial element is provided it is mounted with its narrow end parallel to a conductive plane, for example the earth. Two such aerial elements may be mounted in mirror image symmetry (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown). Reduction of side lobes in the radiation pattern is achieved by the use of dielectric refracting elements. These may be mounted on the ground plane (Fig. 4, not shown), or may take the form of dielectric rods mounted in front of the bentover portion of the aerial and parallel or perpendicular to the ground plane (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown).
