Abstract
1,269,633. Aerials. EMI Ltd. 5 May, 1969 [9 May, 1968], No. 22140/68. Heading H4A. An aerial comprises a conductor which undulates about an axis so as to form a series of elements disposed on alternate sides thereof. The elements, which are, for example, of arcuate or of sinusoidal shape, have amplitudes relative to the axis, and extensions along the axis, which respectively increase and decrease from each end of the aerial towards its centre. Each adjacent pair of elements conforms substantially to an adjacent pair of elements of a respective Dolph- Tchebycheff array of a length equal to the aerial ; each such array has a number of elements related to the axial extension of one of the respective pair of elements of the aerial; and each such Dolph-Tchebycheff array has substantially the same main lobe direction and substantially the same main lobe to side lobe ratio. As described, an aerial comprises a strip transmission line in which an undulatory conductor 1, Fig. 1, with axis 4, is mounted on a slab of lowloss dielectric material 2, the underside of which is clad with conductive material to form a ground plane 3. A method of determining the shape of the conductor 1 is described, equations being given. A further ground plane may be provided above the conductor 1, with a slit cut in it, to permit transmission or reception over the length of said slit. It is also possible to dispsene with any ground plane. The aerial is suitable for installation in radio-guided missiles.
