962,360. Radio signalling; aerials. TOKYO SHIBAURA ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. May 16, 1962 [May 16, 1961], No. 18832/62. Headings H4A and H4L. In a system for radio communication between vehicles following a fixed track, e.g. a railway, or between a fixed station and a vehicle moving along the track, a circular waveguide 2 is laid between the two rails of the railway track and is connected at one end with the fixed transmitting and receiving station. A plurality of lengths of rectangular waveguide 3, 31 &c. with radiating slots 8, 81 &c. are coupled into the waveguide 2 by radially projecting coupling portions 5, 51 &c. and corresponding apertures 4, 41 &c., phaseadjusting devices P being included if desired. The ends 6 of the waveguides 3 &c. are provided with terminating resistors R, R1 &c. and the waveguides 3 are arranged so that the final radiating slot of one overlaps the first slot of the next. Alternatively, the waveguides may terminate short of each other providing the slots 8 are arranged to be equispaced along the whole length of the waveguide 2. Directional couplers may be used instead of the couplings 5, Fig. 4 (not shown). Single conductor transmission lines may replace the lengths of waveguide 3, Fig. 6 (not shown), or the waveguide 2 may have a coating of dielectric material with gaps at predetermined intervals which is coupled into the waveguide 2 similarly to the lengths of waveguide 3 to provide radiating elements, Fig. 7 (not shown).
