Abstract

117,943. Bickerton, H. N., Balmford, A. B., and National Gas Engine Co. Aug. 8, 1917. Four-stroke-cycle engines. - In an engine in which liquid fuel is sprayed through a nozzle c into a water-cooled combustion space b provided with the usual inlet and exhaust valves, a piston f, at the end of the compression stroke, forces a portion of the charge through a passage k and a heated tube l into the space b in proximity to the nozzle e, the temperature produced being high enough to cause combustion. External heat need only be applied to the tube l during starting.
