[Also in Division C7] Heterocyclic compounds having a pyridine or quinoline nucleus substituted in the α- or yposition by -CH 2 -CHOH-R, where R is a substituted or unsubstituted monovalent aliphatic radical are produced by reacting the corresponding α- or y-methyl derivative with an aliphatic aldehyde at 20‹ to 40‹ C. The methylsubstituted heterocyclic compound may be α- or y-picoline or quinaldine and the aliphatic aldehyde may be formaldehyde chloral or propargyl aldehyde. The compounds may be dehydrated to the corresponding pyridine or quinoline compounds containing a -CH = CH-R group.
