Abstract
1,179,115. Rolling. DAVY & UNITED ENG. CO. Ltd. 26 May, 1967 [26 May, 1966], No. 24641/67. Divided out of 1,179,114. Heading B3M. The screw-down for each housing of a rolling mill comprises a wedge unit 36 which is operated by a screw 46, 46a, the greater part of the horizontal component of rolling load being relieved from the screw by means of hydraulic cylinders 48, 48a, Fig. 3, in plan, extending between the units. Roller bearings P.T.F.E. coatings, grease, or hydraulic lubrication is provided between the sliding wedge surfaces. The screw is controlled by an automatic gauge control circuit in which the rolling load, derived from a load cell, together with the desired gauge and the mill constants, are fed to a summing and comparison unit and a resulting error signal is used to control the screws. The pressure in the cylinders 48, 48a is also automatically adjusted to keep the load on the screw within a desired range. The horizontal component of the rolling load derived from the load cell and the pressure in the cylinders are summed, and the result compared with a desired load on the screw to produce an error signal controlling the cylinder pressure.
