Abstract

1,178,959. Taking up slack in flexible cables; masted lift trucks. CASCADE CORP. 5 June, 1968 [6 Oct., 1967]. No. 26744/68. Headings B8B and B8H. A spring reel 44 for taking up slack in hoses extending from a power source to a loadhandling device on a movable carriage of a masted lift truck, includes a chamber within the hub of the reel and in which is housed a swivel connection member 83 for the hoses, and an opening in the hub surface for the passage of the hoses therethrough, which opening is opened to one side to permit the placement of hoses therein when one shroud 56 of the reel is removed therefrom. The reel shroud 56, including an integral section 56b of the hub, is bolted at arcuate intervals 66 to the other shroud 54 which has the spring unit 46 bolted to its outer face. The helical spring 70 of the unit. 46 is anchored at its outer end 78 to the spring casing 72 and at its inner end to a stud 86 in a journal member 48 upon which the reel and spring casing are rotatably mounted. The connection member 83 is also rotatably mounted on the journal member 48 and is driven therearound by bosses housing the bolts 66 on the hub, engaging a projection 92 on the member 83. The latter includes passages 104, 110 communieating the hoses 38, 40 on the reel with passages 96, 98 in the journal member 48, the latter passages communicating with hoses 26, 28 extending to the power supply source. The remote ends of the hoses 38, 40 are connected through a swivel coupling on the mast carriage to further hoses coupled to the device to be operated on the carriage. In a modification, for separating hoses on the reel, a flanged hub section is insertable between the said two shroud hub sections to divide the reel axially. In a further embodiment, the hoses are replaced by electrical conductors the power being conducted from the journal member to the conductors on the reel by slip rings and brushes. The lift truck has a two-sectioned hydraulic ram-operated telescopic mast the carriage being movable up and down the top section of the mast by chains and sprockets associated with the ram.
