In a machine in which patterns or samples from magazines 29 in a predetermined arrangement are attached simultaneously to a sample card, the card is carried by a carriage F which the operator moves along horizontal guides 3 between stations in which the card receives a pattern of glue or other adhesive, and in which the patterns are attached. In the form illustrated the part of the carriage supporting the card can be pressed against springs 48 by a fixed ram 36 into engagement with a resiliently mounted grid supporting the magazines 29. The patterns are pushed upwardly against the glue patches on the card by rams 32 which act for a predetermined time after the grid has been depressed in response to a manual control. The glue is first applied to the card at station C by a platen 10 moved upwardly by a ram 15. A gluing trolley 4 is pushed by the operator until it abuts a member 45 on the trolley carrying the card so that the gluing trolley is located first at a station where it engages a gluing roller 8 and subsequently at the station C where the platen 10 is moved to receive glue from it. Alternatively, the gluing trolley can be moved by a ram either automatically or under manual control. The card is held on the trolley by catches 59 (Fig. 7) moved apart against springs 62, to release the card, when a frame 54 carrying the catches is forced downwardly by a manuallyoperated screw 51, so that a fixed surface 64 engages cam surfaces 63 on the catches.
