Apparatus for positioning a load, e.g. a coil of steel strip, L, Fig. 1, on a generally horizontal vehicle bed 32, comprises parallel generally horizontal spaced-apart pipes 34; L-shaped positioning members 36 fitted into the ends of at least one pipe 34 to engage in associated pockets 33 on the sides of the bed 32; generally parallel horizontal spaced-apart load-engaging pipes 41, substantially at right angles to the pipes 34; and connecting devices 39 connecting the pipes 34 and 41, the devices 39 being adjustably positionable along the pipes 34 and maintained in position by the weight of the load bearing on the pipes 41. Each device 39 has a hollow body portion 45, Figs. 3 and 4, through which a pipe 34 passes and a gripper 43 to grip the pipe 34, the gripper 43 being pivoted at 44 to the body portion 45 and comprising a mounting portion 42 and a contact member 46 pivoted to the portion 42 and having serrations 47 to grip the pipe 34. The mounting portion 42 has slots 40 in its side walls to receive a pipe 41 which latter is maintained in position by a screw 53 on the portion 42 and operable by a handle 55. Sleeves 59 of rubber may be provided on the pipes 41.
