1,176,694. Oxalic acid. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 10 Sept., 1968 [29 Sept., 1967], No. 44476/67. Heading C2C. Copper oxalate, particularly that produced as a purge from a process for the oxidation of olefinic compounds in the presence of noble metal catalysts with a copper salt redox system, is converted to oxalic acid and cupric chloride by dissolving in aqueous hydrochloric acid and recrystallizing the oxalic acid therefrom. The hydrochloric acid is at least 6 normal. The recrystallization is by cooling to ambient temperature and the cupric chloride may be recycled to the oxidation process, e.g. the preparation of vinyl acetate from ethylene, oxygen and acetic acid using palladious chloride catalyst with copper acetate or chloride.
