Abstract
Mono-carboxylic acids are recovered from mixtures thereof with bromine or bromine-containing substances, particularly hydrogen bromide, by distilling the mixtures in the presence of a metal compound or compounds which inhibit the volatilisation of the bromine or bromine-containing substances. If the mixture is obtained in an oxidation process, e.g. that described in Specification 807,091, the metallic compound can be added as the catalyst for the oxidation reaction, or may be added in addition to the catalyst ; otherwise the compound is added after the mixture has been obtained. Oxides, hydroxides, and salts of acids other than strong mineral acids, e.g. carbonates, acetates, propionates and benzoates, of sodium, potassium, calcium, barium, nickel, zinc, silver, lead, iron, aluminium, cobalt and manganese, are specified. Sufficient metal compound or compounds are added to ensure a stoichiometric ratio of metal to bromine greater than 1 : 1, preferably between 2 : 1 and 3 : 1. In Examples there is described the recovery of acetic acid and propionic acid from mother liquors obtained by bromide controlled air oxidation of para-xylene to terephthalic acid.ALSO:Mono-carboxylic acids are recovered from mixtures thereof with bromine or bromine-containing substances, particularly hydrogen bromide, by distilling the mixtures in the presence of a metal compound or compounds which inhibit the volatilisation of the bromine or bromine-containing substances.
