Abstract

1,176,257. Ion sources. BOHLER & COA.G. GEB. 20 Oct., 1967 [21 Oct., 1966], No- 47769/67. Heading H1D. An ion source comprises electrodes 1 and 2 between which a conical or disc-shaped gas discharge is maintained, gas to be ionized being supplied through a conduit 4. The rod 2 is the cathode and may be of thoriated tungsten, and is separated from the anode 1 by an insulator 3. The anode may be a conductive cylinder of thoriated tungsten and a further electrode (not shown) may be provided adjacent the open end of the anode to extract the ions formed. The conical discharge acts as a barrier to gas flow from the source 4 to the utilization device, so the former may be at atmospheric pressure.
