[Also in Division C7] To produce a patterned electrical conductor on an insulating support, such as a printed circuit, a photo-polymerizable insulating material is exposed to light in the desired pattern and metal is deposited electrolessly on to the parts polymerized but not over the unpolymerized material, which reacts with the plating solution used to inhibit deposition. Preferably, copper is deposited from an alkaline solution. The photo-polymerizable material may be a coating on insulating or metal plates, e.g. of aluminium or steel. After the copper is deposited the remaining photo-polymerizable material may be exposed to ultraviolet light to stabilize it and further copper, silver or nickel may be deposited on the copper.
