To use a ladder on, e.g. a greenhouse roof, a plate 10 with a number of clamping devices thereon is fixed directly or indirectly to the top and/or the bottom of the ladder, with the clamping devices facing downwards to grip. the upstanding flanges of inverted T-section greenhouse roof members. Each device may comprise a member 14 sliding in a groove 11 and having fixed to it a cross arm 15 pivoted to a serrated edged lever 15 at each end, each lever 16 being pivoted in turn to a further lever 17. An alternative clamping device rollers can move in converging grooves to grip the flange. The ladder may have rollers and be arranged to move horizontally on a frame which is itself clamped to the roof members.
