Abstract

1,174,380. Luminescent materials. GENERAL TELEPHONE & ELECTRONICS LABORATORIES Inc. 5 Nov., 1968 [16 Nov., 1967], No. 52347/68. Heading C4S. A phosphor comprises U activated Ba pyrophosphate and may include Mg or Cd. Phosphors having the formula Ba 2-x .Mx.P 2 O 7 :U y , where M is Mg or Cd; x is 0 to 1 and y is 0.02 to 0.6 are prepared by blending BaHPO 3 with UO 2 (NO 3 ) 2 .6H 2 O or UO 3 , a source of phosphorus plus M.O or a compound which decomposes to the oxide, e.g. dibasic M phosphate, Mg(NH 4 )- PO 4 or CdO plus (NH 4 ) 2 HPO 4 . The blend may include excess CdO to compensate for evaporation losses and is fired twice. The phosphor is excited by U.V. or X-radiation, electrons and ion bombardment.
