Abstract
1,174,268. Nuclear fuel. NUKEM NUKLEAR - CHEMIE UND - METALLURGIE G.m.b.H. 9 Dec., 1966 [10 Dec., 1965], No. 55166/66. Heading G6C [Also in Division C7] Nuclear fuel comprising coated carbide or oxide particles is made by heating " green " particles containing nuclear fuel oxide with or without carbon to sinter or fuse the particles and to form the carbide if required and then coating with pyrolytic carbon in the same vessel. The particles may be heated at 1000-2550‹ C. under reduced or raised pressure. In an example particles containing UO 2 , ThO 2 and carbon are heated as a fluidized bed to 1700‹ C. to form the mixed carbide and then treated with methane to form a layer of pyrolytic carbon; by raising the temperature to 2000‹ C. the core contracts, leaving a gap between the core and the coating. Reference is also made to the use of a revolving tubular or barrel furnace. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 945,063, 943,719 and 878,927.
