Abstract

Coated nuclear fuel particles are made by introducing fuel particles into the top of a fluidised bed furnace, fed by upward-flowing current of inert gas and at least one gas which cracks at 1000-3000 degrees C, the pressure in the furnace being 1-20 bars depositing carbon on the particles. The fuel being cracked is a hydrocarbon such as methane, acetylene, propane, methytrichlorosilane etc, which may be diluted with H2. By considerably increasing the pressures at which carbon is deposited, the deposition time is shortened and the cost of prodn. is drastically reduced.
