Abstract

1,174,081. Continuous composite casting; making tubes. TEXAS INSTRUMENTS Inc. 24 Oct., 1966 [8 Nov., 1965], No. 47495/66. Headings B3A and B3F. [Also in Division B5] To make a clad length, a continuous core, 25 of strip or cable (which may be woven), mesh or rod or wire (which may be multiple) moves, e.g. through a guide 9, into a melt which forms on the core a collar 43 and enters a water-cooled die 9 into which further melt 47 is urged by the melt pressure to add to the cladding which is smoothed by wiping of the (e.g. putty-like) surface layer in a straight bore portion 13 before solidification is completed in a flared portion 15. The melt 3, which may be A1, Cu, Zn or Pb, is in a receptacle 1 with a heater 8. The core 25 may be steel, W, (anodized) Al, or Mo (or carbon to be burnt out later to make an A1 or Cu tube) and may be the same material as the melt 3. A gate 27, in which the melt level may be lower, may surround the guide 19 to be raised or lowered to control melt- and heat-flow to the core 25 and thus control the thickness of the first cladding layer 43 which may also be controlled by direct heating of the core 25 by connecting a voltage supply 36 over a length of it. An electrical connection 39 may be made to the die 9 instead of the cladding 54 as shown. An inert atmosphere or vacuum may surround all or part of the apparatus. In a gateless embodiment, Fig. 6 (not shown), gas jets are directed at the guide inlet and die outlet. In another, Fig. 2 (not shown), the core (2) is drawn upwardly through a die 67 at the top of melt reservoir 63 and into which the melt 59 is forced by the head created by an upper, heated chamber 57.
