Abstract
1,173,944. Valves. STANDARD OIL CO. 13 June, 1967 [22 June, 1966], No. 27320/67. Heading F2V. A valve which automatically prevents passage of a selected fluid, such as gasoline, comprises a body 6 having a valve seat 18 adjacent its inlet 7, a valve stem 21 mounted for axial movement within the body and carrying a valve plate 23 at its upstream end, a rigidly mounted member 37 extending into the valve body, a valve position indicator 49, a baffle 54 to create a reservoir of fluid within the body and a block 40 of material soluble in the selected fluid interposed between the valve stem and the rigidly mounted member. The valve may be used to close a flexible hose serving as a drain from the floating roof of a gasoline storage tank if the hose ruptures and allows gasoline to escape. When the presence of gasoline causes the block 40, which may be of polystyrene, to dissolve, a spring 25 displaces the valve stem 21 to close the valve and release a hammer lever 51 connected to the valveposition indicator 49, which is rotated by a spring.
