A lifting and stripping device for stripping an ingot 31 from a suspended mould 30 comprises a cross-member 1 to which a hook 12 of lifting machinery is engaged, and piston-rods connected to the cross-member 1 so that, on lifting, hydraulic fluid in cylinder space 10 of pressure cylinders 4 is forced into a stripping cylinder 6 to force downwards a ram 9 to push the ingot 31 from the mould 30. Balancing tanks (13) (Fig. 1, not shown), and non-return valves (17) in the hydraulic circuit ensures the transfer of hydraulic fluid without creating partial vacuums in the cylinders. The cylinders 4 and 6 are mounted in a housing 5 that has mounted thereon lifting tongs (24), (Fig. 3, not shown), held open by weights (22) and the dead weight of the cross-member 1. When the device is lifted the cross-member 1 and weights (22) are raised relative to the housing 5 to allow the tongs (24) to engage the mould (30). A system of latches (25), (26), (27) and levers (28) (Fig. 5, not shown) mounted on the housing 5 and cross-member 1 enable the device to be lifted with the tongs (24) open and so to release an empty mould (30). Rotatable cross-pieces (21) on the end of guide rods (19a) and engageable with abutments (20) may be used limit the movement of the ram 9 when lifting (empty moulds or) moulds containing ingots not to be stripped. The ram 9 is counter-balanced by weights (19), (Fig. 5, not shown), to retract the ram 9 after a stripping operation. The arrangement of piston-rods 2 and cylinders 4 may be inverted so that the piston-rods point downwards and an extra cross-member is attached to the cross-member 1.
