Abstract
1,173,897. Nuclear fuel. GES. FUR KERNENERGIEVERWERTUNG IN SCHIFFBAU UND SCHIFFAHRT m.b.H. 12 Dec., 1966 [14 Dec., 1965; 24 Dec., 1965], No. 55587/66. Heading G6C. [Also in Divisions Cl and C7] A nuclear fuel or breeder substance is coated with a layer containing silicon and carbon by the pyrolytic decomposition at above 1000‹ C. of an organosilane in which each silicon bond not connected to a carbon atom is connected to a hydrogen atom or to another silicon atom; in a preliminary coating stage the temperature may be 300-600‹ C. Particles coated in this way retain fission products when used in a gas cooled high temperature reactor. The organosilane may be applied in solution and may be decomposed in an inert, reducing or oxidizing atmosphere, or in a high vacuum. A first layer of pyrolytic graphite may be applied to absorb fission product gases, and this layer may contain oxides of Si, Ti or Zr. The second layer according to the invention may contain nitrogen, oxygen, or Ti or Zr compounds formed by adding polysilazanes, polysiloxanes, or organic Ti or Zr compounds to the organosilane, oxides, carbides or nitrides of U233, U235, U238, Pu 239, or Th may be coated.
