Abstract

Silicon carbide powder having a high sinterability can be produced by thermally decomposing an organosilicon polymer containing silicon, boron and oxygen as main skeleton components and having groups containing carbon in the side chain at a temperature of 1,300-2,000 DEG C under vacuum, under a reducing atmosphere or under an inert gas atmosphere, heating the thermally decomposed powdery product at a temperature of 500-800 DEG C under an oxidizing atmosphere, and then treating the powder with acid containing at least hydrofluoric acid. The silicon carbide powder can be formed into a sintered body having a high density and bending strength by sintering the powder together with carbon or a mixture of carbon and boron under vacuum, under a carbon monoxide gas atmosphere or under an inert gas atmosphere.
