Abstract
A cermet nuclear fuel comprises a fissile metal containing ceramic dispersed in an aluminium matrix, the matrix comprising an aluminium or aluminium alloy powder whose surfaces are nitrided. The nitride layer is formed by treating the powder with nitrogen or ammonia, and is carried out at a pressure of 2 to 100 mm. Hg. at a temperature of 500-650 DEG C. for 2 to 8 hours. The presence of oxide layers on the powder has no deleterious effect, nor does the presence of up to 30% oxygen in the nitriding atmosphere.
