Abstract

A substrate of e.g. Fe, Ni or Co is coated with loosely adherent oxide particles of 1 to 20 microns of e.g. TiO 2 or Al 2 O 3 prior to a halide diffusion coating, to entrap the oxide particles in the diffusion coating. The oxide particles may be applied as a slurry in a resin binder. The diffusion coating may be formed using 40% of an alloy comprising 50 to 70% Ti, 20 to 48% Al, and 0.5 to 9% combined carbon, and 60% Al 2 O 3 with 0.2% of NH 4 F, and heating in hydrogen at 1400 to 2100 F. The substrate may be a Ni base alloy containing (wt. per cent):-
