Abstract
1,173,085. Sliding clasp fasteners. OPTIHOLDING A.G. 17 Feb., 1967 [3 March, 1966 (2)], No. 7714/67. Heading E2S. [Also in Division D1] A sliding clasp fastener comprises two stringer tapes each of which consists of or includes a sleeve 5 which partially surrounds a respective interlocking element 2 with integrally connected headed teeth 3, the sleeve having perforations initially of sufficient size for the passage of the headed teeth, the stringer tape having been shrunk transversely to reduce the circumference of the sleeve to less than that of the element, thus securing the element partially within the sleeve with the heads 4 of the teeth protruding beyond the perforations, there being means 6 within the element to prevent relative movement between the element and the sleeve. As described each stringer is produced by feeding the element into a loom through a guide 16, the sleeve being woven over the guide and warp threads being omitted during the weaving to provide the perforations. The guide has a bend in its length so that the heads of the teeth are spread apart as the element and the stringer tape pass the bend, the weft threads 23 being supported against the back of the guide 11 at the bend by a substantially triangular guide 24. Inside the guide is a wedge-like thickening which starts from the bend and which causes the teeth to protrude through the perforations in the sleeve. The teeth are engaged by a toothed roll 18 to move the elements in the guide and on the opposite side of the guide is a roll 19 which has a knurled surface to grip the sleeve 14. The roll 19 has a guide flange 22 to support the sleeve as it moves round the bend in the guide. Beyond the spreading device is a shrinking device (not shown) for shrinking the sleeve onto the elements. Although as shown the stringer tape includes a portion extending from the sleeve by which it is fixed to a garment this can be omitted if desired. A modification is described in which the element is covered by a strip of plastics material bent to U shape or two strips one on each side before the sleeve is woven over it. It is also stated that the stringer tape can be knitted, braided or plaited instead of being woven.
