[Also in Division D1] A composition used in the waving, straightening or colouring of hair is made by mixing (I) (a) a water -soluble salt of Mg, Ca, Zn, Cd, Ba, Sr, Al, Co, Sm, Mn, Fe, Cr, Ag, Au, Pt, Ni or Cu with (b) an alkaline solution of an enzyme, protein, peptide or amino-acid, together with (II) 0.1-2% by weight of a nonionic or anionic surface active agent, the composition being held at a pH of 7-12 by (III) an organic amine or source of alkali metal ion or ammonium ion also yielding hydroxyl ions in aqueous solution. The anionic surface active agent may be a sodium sulphuric acid ester of a high alcohol, the nonionic surface active agent may be a polyoxyethylene alkyl phenol ether and the protein or enzyme may be casein, peptone, amylase, protease or lipase, and the composition may also contain a perfume and in the case of a hair cream, methyl cellulose, fluid paraffin, lanolin or wax. In Examples: (2) the composition is prepared by mixing together casein, a nonionic surface active agent, cobaltous chloride and sodium hydroxide and (3) the composition is prepared by mixing together amylase, an anionic surface active agent, ferric chloride and sodium hydroxide, and then formed into a cream by mixing with polyoxyethylene cetyl alcohol ether, perfume and a pigment.
