The centres of the inlet and exhaust valves SV, VV, are arranged on an axis parallel to a diametrical plane through the cylinder axis at the axis of a rotationally symmetrical combustion chamber 5 in the piston is offset to the same side of said plane as the valves. The fuel injector 10 may be arranged on the combustion chamber axis with symmetrically arranged injection orifices or, as shown, offset from said axis and arranged to inject fuel jets 11 to one side of the combustion chamber 5.
