Abstract

1,171,907. Rotary pumps. ARMSTRONG PATENTS CO. Ltd. Dec.7, 1966 [Dec.7, 1965] No.51740/65. Heading F1F. A roller vane pump comprises a rotor 34, Fig. 2, having a plurality of blades 36 defining pumping chambers 38 each co-operable with a roller vane 40, a cam-ring 44 within which the rotor is rotatably and eccentrically mounted and plate members 26, 30, Fig. 1 between which the rotor is sandwiched. Liquid is drawn into the pumping chambers through an inlet connection 43, in a cover 14 and an annular recess 46 and arcuate inlet ports 50, 52 in the plate member 30 and is discharged from the chambers through arcuate ports 56, 58 in the plate member 26 to a chamber 54 behind that member. The chamber 54 is connected to a discharge connection 68, Fig. 3, in the pump body 12 via a passage 62, a valve chamber 60 and a passage 64 having a restriction 66. To allow free running of the rotor without undue leakage the width of cam-ring 44 is made slightly greater than that of the rotor 34. A radial slot 27 on the inner face of each plate member communicates with the pumping chambers 38 opens into annular chambers 74, 76 which communicate with axially-extending grooves 70, 72 in the plate members to cool and lubricate the bearings. The slots 27 also promptly remove pressure from the pumping chambers to reduce noise. Replacement of internal parts is facilitated by the removability of the cover 14. To maintain the quantity and pressure of liquid discharged by the pump substantially constant a spool valve 86 is subjected on one end to pump discharge pressure and on its other end to throttled discharge pressure and the loading of a spring 94. A loose-ball relief valve 106 relieves excessive pump-pressure and instantly reduces pressure on the left-hand end of the valve spool to permit leftward movement of the latter to unload the pump.
