Abstract

1,171,203. Joint-making packing; washers. DOWTY SEALS Ltd. 9 Feb., 1968 [16 Feb., 1967], No. 7541/67. Headings F2B and F2H. A sealed joint comprises a ring 5 arranged in a countersink in one of the two parts 1, 2 to be sealed against fluid pressure, the angle of generation G of the countersink being greater than the sum of the angle of friction of the contiguous surfaces of the ring and part 1 plus the angle of friction of the contiguous surfaces of the ring and part 2 but being less than 90 degrees minus the sum of the two angles of friction so that the ring in use can expand and contract within the limits of its elastic properties. The parts 1, 2 to be sealed may be of steel and the ring 5 made of H.T. steel or plastics. In threading the two parts together, the ring is forced down the inclined face; if the two parts are moved apart due to fluid pressure, the ring will expand and maintain sealing contact. In an example, the countersink angle of 30 degrees is chosen for conditions when both the angles of friction are 11 degrees (i.e. between limits 22 and 68 degrees).
