Abstract

A process of producing an N-alkyl substituted amine comprises reacting an amine compound, a nitrocompound or a nitroso compound with an aldehyde or ketone in the presence of hydrogen and of a catalytic system comprising (a) a nickel catalyst, and (b) at least one acid selected from sulphur-free acids and sulphurcontaining acids in which the sulphur is in the form of a radical. In Examples 2-66 N-4-methyl-2- pentyl - N<SP>1</SP> - phenyl - para - phenylenediamine is made by reacting para-aminodiphenylamine with methyl isobutyl ketone in the presence of various catalyst systems. Examples 67-78 describe the use of other reactants, e.g. paminodiphenylamine with 2-octanone, methyl ethyl ketone; aniline with methyl isobutylketone; paraphenylenediamine with 2-octanone; and p-nitrodiphenylamine with methyl ethyl ketone.
