Abstract
1451777 Secondary aliphatic amines HOECHST AG 14 Nov 1973 [14 Nov 1972] 52892/73 Heading C2C Secondary amines are made by reacting a C 7-24 aliphatic alcohol with ammonia in the presence of hydrogen and a hydrogenating- dehydrogenating catalyst at a temperature of 120-250‹ C. and a pressure of 0À5-6À0 atmospheres absolute, the ammonia and the hydrogen being passed through the alcohol at a combined gas rate of at least 50 litres per hour and per kilogram of alcohol and the water formed in the reaction being removed with the gas stream. The gas mixture may also include an inert gas (e.g. N 2 and/or CH 4 ). Reaction may be performed either by an "open" method or by a "closed" method in which the gases coming off from the alcohol are recycled. In the "closed" method, no outside source of hydrogen need be used, the hydrogen obtained by dehydrogenation of the reaction mixture sufficing. At the beginning of the reaction the gas flow may consist wholly or mainly of ammonia and at the end of the reaction the gas flow may consist wholly or mainly of hydrogen. Specified catalysts are cobalt and/or nickel with or without copper, and cobalt and chrome together with alkali metals or barium.
