Abstract

1396985 Alkylation of amines BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 13 Oct 1972 47275/72 Heading C2C The invention comprises a process for the production of an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic sec- or tert amine in which an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic carbonyl compound is reacted with ammonia or an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic primary or secondary amine in the presence of hydrogen and a hydrogenation catalyst comprising of a mixture of silver and palladium, and optionally MnO 2 or V 2 O 5 , applied to a heat sintered (e.g. at 1000-1300‹ C.) carrier. It is preferred that the ammonia when used is in an excess of up to 800 molar per cent with respect to the carbonyl compound and that the excess of amine, when used, is up to 400% molar w.r.t. the carbonyl compound. Exemplified reactants are cyclopentanone, cyclohexanone, cycloheptanone, isobutyraldehyde, 2-ethylhexanal; formaldehyde, morpholine, cyclohexylamine, methylamine, dimethylamine and pyrrolidine.
