Abstract

1,170,415. Dry cooling towers. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 13 Dec., 1966 [14 Dec., 1965], No. 53046/65. Heading F4S. A water-cooling system includes a dry cooling tower having an ellipsoidal shell 11, rows of coolers 20 grouped into sectors and pairs of inlet and outlet water mains 37, 38, the coolers of each row in each sector being connected in common with a separate pair of mains. Water to be cooled is passed from the condenser of a steam turbine plant within the shell 11 to a valve 18 in each sector and thence through pipes 42 to mains 37. In another embodiment three valves 18 are provided for each sector, one for each row of coolers. The coolers may be of the same size in each row or vary in width from row to row. The shell 11 is made of aluminium, steel or plastics sheet supported on a tubular steel frame, or of prestressed or reinforced concrete. The sector valves 18 may be replaced by a drain tank which is connected to the sectors of coolers and to the condenser as described in Specification 1,020,448.
