[Also in Division G1] The coating produced on a web by an aqueous coating process is monitored for streaks by a photo-electric measuring head movable across the web at a point where the coating is still wet, the measuring head comprising a transducer sensitive to the 2Á absorption band of water. The web may be paper coated with photographic emulsion or polyethylene. Radiation from a filament lamp is focused on to the coated paper through a filter which removes wavelengths which would expose the emulsion. It passes through the coating and is scattered back by the paper through the coating and a 2Á filter to the PbS photo-cell. The measuring head is reciprocated across the web and its output is fed through a threshold circuit and a delay device to a recording element moved in synchronism with the measuring head. The recording head may be of the type which burns dots into metallized paper.
