Abstract

1, 120, 596. Photo-electric burner control. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. May 12, 1967 [May 12, 1966] No. 21099/66. Heading G1A. Flame monitoring apparatus of the type which determines the ratio of the fluctuating component of the flame radiation to the steady component is tested at will by shining on to the photo-sensitive device auxiliary steady radiation having an effect comparable to the steady radiation from the flame. If this does not substantially reduce the measured ratio, the apparatus is faulty. The auxiliary radiation may be provided by a lamp positioned so that radiation from the flame normally passes through it. The apparatus may be arranged to retract a burner when the flame is defective and the retraction means may be rendered inoperative whilst the lamp is energized. The lamp and photoresponsive device may be formed as a demountable unit in a cylinder, one end of which is closed by a radiation transparent diaphragm as described in Specification 1, 120, 595. (see Division F4).
