Abstract
1,169,442. Wrenches. SEABOARD TOOL CORP. 17 Feb., 1967 [1 Feb., 1966], No. 7801/67. Heading B3N. A chuck-like wrench comprises a handle 13, and a tubular closer member 20 pinned to the handle at 23 and terminating in an open end 24 which surrounds the inner end of a cylindrical array of elongate jaws 30 which terminate in spaced jaw faces 33 and are surrounded by a cylindrical actuator 40. When the actuator 40 is placed over a nut and pressure applied to the handle 13, the closer 20 moves against spring pressure and carries with it the jaws 30. As the jaws thus move downward through the actuator 40, camming surfaces within the latter close the jaws to grip the nut. Relative rotation between the jaws 30 and the handle 13 is prevented by projections 25 engaging between the jaws 30. Each jaw is provided with a shaped end 35 (Fig. 2, not shown) furnishing a shoulder 34 against which the face of the nut abuts. In a modification (Fig. 7, not shown), the handle is furnished with an archimedean screw engaged by a ratchet-operated reversible drive means.
