Abstract

1,168,686. Rotary retort furnaces. C. ARRIZAGA and A. GAJARDO. 18 Sept., 1967, No. 42468/67. Heading F4B. A rotary retort furnace for roasting ores e.g. molybdenite comprises a series of tubular retorts 36 mounted between hollow disc-like boxes 32 and 34 on a hollow axle 30 driven by motor M and reduction gearing R, the whole being disposed in a reverberating furnace fired by burners 14 in each corner opening into combustion chambers 12 defined by vertical walls extending upwardly into the furnace chamber. The charging ends of the retorts 36 extend through box 32 which is outside the furnace and are closed by doors 38 provided with central ports 42 for the supply of air and for sighting the reaction progress. The other ends of the retorts abut the inner face of box 34 inside the furnace, and open into said box through ports 48, the box itself opening into axle 30 through ports 44. The boxes 32 and 34 are in turn mounted on a truck 50 running on a ball race formed between pairs of rails 53 by an adjustable bearing 56 for the axle 30. In situ the other end of the axle is supported by a bearing 60 outside the furnace. The retorts are charged by a long trough feeder (Fig. 3) and discharged by a rake (Fig. 4) by hand. During roasting air enters the retorts through ports 42 or oxygenated air or commercial O 2 is supplied therethrough, an ejector box 62 supplied with compressed air drawing reaction gases from the retorts and cooling air through the cooler 30.
