Abstract

1,168,539. Laminate. DISPRO Ltd. 13 May, 1968 [26 May, 1967], No. 24527/67. Heading B5N. A process for laminating an aperture-containing substrate to a film comprises applying a solution of an adhesive directly to the film, partially removing the solvent in the solution, laminating the film to the substrate, and subjecting the film to a treatment which renders non-adhesive the adhesive on that part of the film covering the aperture. The substrate may be of paper, paperboard, synthetic resin or synthetic resin-coated paper or paperboard, and the film may be of oriented polypropylene, cellulose acetate, PVC or polyethylene terephthalate. The adhesive may be rendered non- adhesive by subjecting it to elevated temperature, e.g. hot air, or by curing it using ultraviolet radiation. In one example an adhesive consisting of an isocyanate polyester and an isocyanate curing agent dissolved in ethyl acetate is applied to a film of oriented polypropylene. The adhesive is subjected to controlled evaporation to render it tacky, and the film is combined with an aperture-containing board prior to passage through a heated nip. The adhesive over the aperture is then allowed to cure, or cured at an elevated temperature. The laminate may be used in envelopes or boxes.
