1,168,145. Making discharge tubes; pipe end closing; seaming; welding by fusion or pressure. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 25 July, 1967 [28 Sept., 1966], No. 34158/67. Headings B3A, B3J, B3H, B3R and B3W. [Also in Division H1] The metal tubing 16, e.g. of an electric discharge lamp or an electronic power tube, is vacuum sealed by deforming a portion of the tubing, pinch sealing the deformed portion, separating the tubing along the pinch seal and arc welding the edges formed by the separation. The deforming is performed by a pair of cooperating hydraulic rams 22 which move together and have jaws 26 releasably mounted thereon by springs 28. After the deforming the rams are withdrawn, the jaws removed, and the tubing nipped to effect a cold weld between a pair of tungsten carbide dowels 24. The nipping preferably separates the tubing, but separate cutters may be used. The tubing end is then housed in a spring holder 30 in a plastics enclosure 34 containing helium or argon and tungsten inert gas arc welded along the seam. The tubing is preferably niobium or tantalum but copper and copper alloys may be used. A coiled tungsten electrode 18 is secured to each piece of tubing 16 and the lamp filled with argon, mercury or sodium before sealing.
