Abstract

952,952. Welding by fusion. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd., and R. M. BROWN. Feb. 7, 1963 [March 16, 1962], No. 10149/62. Heading B3R. Prior to welding pipes end-to-end, an interior portion of the pipes around the joint is isolated by inflating one or more inflatable members and the portion is filled with a substance, e.g., an inert gas or a flux, for aiding the welding. An inflatable member 10 is formed by forming weld seams along the lines shown in full in Fig. 1, in a pair of superimposed layers of plastic or metal, e.g. aluminium, foil, to form a pocket 15 extending along both sides and an end of the member 10. This end is narrower and fits within the other end when inflated as shown in Fig. 2. The inflatable member 10 is located in a pipe 25 by adhesive strip 32 and a fusible insert of the same metal as the pipes 24, 25 is positioned at the root of the seam. Inflation is effected through a tube connected to the pocket 15 or by a substance in the pocket 15 during preheating of the pipes. Inert gas, e.g., argon, is fed through a tube 31 in the insert to the space enclosed by the member 10 and the seam is welded by a gas shielded arc welding torch 27. Subsequently the joint is stress-relieved at a temperature that causes the member 10 to collapse or melt and the member 10 is washed away during hydrostatic testing of the weld.
