Abstract

1,167,391. Monitoring the degassing of molten steel. LECTROMELT CORP. 27 Oct., 1966 [18 Nov., 1965], No. 48194/65. Heading B1X. The rate of oxygen removal from vacuum degassing apparatus for treating molten steel, comprising a vacuum chamber connected to evacuating means, is determined by combining measurements of the proportion of at least one of the oxygen-containing gases in the discharge gases from the chamber, of the amount of molten metal treated therein, and of the rate of gas removal therefrom. As shown, molten steel 12 is drawn from a ladle 11 into a vacuum vessel 10 by the action of a steam ejector pumping system 25; the weight of the metal treated is determined by a strain gauge 66 attached to the ram 19 supporting the vessel 10, or by a measuring device 65 below the ladle 11, and this information is fed to a recorder 68 and to an analogue computer 30. The rate of gas removal is measured by determining the suction pressure of the pumping system 25 and converting it by means of an analogue function generator 70 into an electrical signal which is also fed to the analogue computer 30. A portion of the discharge gases is withdrawn through filters 44 and 51 and analysed for percentages of H 2 , CO, and CO 2 by a gas analyser 38, e.g. by a thermal conductivity cell for the H 2 and by infra-red cells for the CO and CO 2 . These percentages are recorded by recorders 58, 60, and that of the CO is transmitted also to the analogue computer 30. The original amount of oxygen present in the grade of steel being treated is determined empirically, and this information is also fed into the computer 30, enabling it to determine the amount of combined and free oxygen remaining in the melt.
