Abstract
1,068,215. Estimating gases occluded in metals. BALZERS PATENT-UND LIZENZASTALT. April 23, 1965 [May 14, 1964], No. 17174/65. Heading B1X. In determining the hydrogen content of metal samples by measuring at 5 the heat conductivity and pressure of the gas mixture formed (known to be N 2 , H 2 and CO) on heating the sample 3 in a furnace in a carbonaceous crucible 2 and then calculating the proportion of hydrogen in this mixture from the measurement obtained, nitrogen or carbon. monoxide is admixed to the gas prior to measuring the heat conductivity in an amount such that the total pressure of the gas mixture is at a predetermined level, so simplifying the calculation. When N 2 is to be determined in addition to H 2 , then CO is used as the auxiliary gas and when CO is to be determined in addition then No is used. A pressure responsive switch 6 connected to the heat conductivity measuring means 5 issues an impulse to a device 7 when the pressure falls beneath a pre-determined level to open a supply pipe from a N 2 or CO storage container 9. A pump 11 and associated valves 12 and 13 allow for the pre-evacuation of the whole device. The apparatus may include carbon monoxide analyser, for example an infra red absorption instrument, whereby the amount of oxygen and hence the amount of nitrogen evolved may be calculated.
