Abstract

1340820 Determining gas concentration electrically BALZERS PATENT-UND BETEILIGUNGS-AG 4 Feb 1972 [11 Feb 1971] 5294/72 Heading G1N The concentration of hydrogen in a gas mixture is determined by measuring its thermal conductivity in a measuring chamber 8 (Fig. 1) in the presence of an auxiliary gas obtained from a container 11 and fed into a pre-chamber 14 until the density is such that a predetermined thermal conductivity is obtained in chamber 8 or 14. The difference between the two thermal conductivities, sensed by Pirani gauges or a heated thermocouple 21, 22, is then indicative of the hydrogen concentration and is shown on a meter 26. The gas flow valves may be controlled automatically by unit 25. The auxiliary gas may be carbon monoxide, nitrogen or air, separately or as a mixture. The test gas mixture may be obtained from a sample 3 heated in a vacuum furnace 1.
