Abstract
1486423 Monitoring liquid treatment GEC MECHANICAL HANDLING Ltd 11 Dec 1974 [12 Dec 1973] 57567/73 Heading G1N [Also in Division C7] The treatment of a liquid in a vessel 1 is monitored by producing an electrical signal representing the weight change of the vessel, extracting a part of that signal which is produced by agitation of that liquid, recording the part, and comparing the recording with an idealized reference curve. As shown, an oxygen steelmaking refractory vessel 1 is mounted by trunnions 3 in bearings 4, each bearing 4 being supported by eight transducers 6. Each transducer comprises a steel cylinder carrying a plurality of foil strain gauges connected in a bridge circuit. The weight representative output signal from summing amplifier 10 is tared at 11, and a sealing amplifier 12 produces a signal representing the change in weight of vessel 1 during the steel making process which signal is recorded at 13, the trace being shown in Fig. 2. Agitation monitor 15 extracts that part of the signal which lies in the frequency range 0À05 to 5 or 0À1 to 1 Hertz to produce an agitation signal which is recorded at 17, trace shown on Fig. 3. The lines 28, 29 respectively at which oxygen lance 7 should be moved into its final position and at which the oxygen supply should be terminated are determined by comparison of the record in Fig. 3 with the reference curve. The invention may also be applied to steel making in which oxygen is injected through the vessel base at 31, and to brewing or winemaking.
