Abstract

1,167,242. Antifreeze composition. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 19 Feb., 1968 [24 Feb., 1967], No. 8863/67. Heading C4X. An antifreeze composition comprises a watermiscible alcohol, an alkali metal arsenate or arsenite, an alkali metal metaborate or tetraborate, a phosphate component being a dialkali metal hydrogen phosphate or an alkanolamine phosphate, and a heterocyclic benzocompound of the general formula in which the benzene ring optionally contains at least one substituent alkyl radical and B is a CH, CSH or CSM group or a nitrogen atom, M being an alkali metal atom, and A represents an oxygen or sulphur atom or an NH group, with the proviso that when A is an oxygen or sulphur atom, B represents a CSH or CSM group only. Suitable benzo-compounds include 2-mercaptobenzoxazole, 2-mercaptobenzthiazole, 4 - ethyl - 2 - mercaptobenzthiazole, 2- mercapto - 4,5 - dimethylbenzthiazole, 2 - mercaptobenzimidazole, sodium 2-mercaptobenzthiazole, potassium 2 - mercaptobenzthiazole, benztriazole, 4-methyl-benztriazole, 5-methylbenztriazole, benzimidazole, 4-methylbenzimidazole, 5-methyl benzimidazole, and 5,6-dimethylbenzimidazole. The phosphate may be dipotassium hydrogen phosphate, triethanolamine phosphate or tri-isopropanolamine phosphate and may be prepared in situ. Sodium or potassium arsenates or arsenites and borates (e.g. borax) may be used. The alcohol may be monoethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, dipropylene glycol or methanol. Optional ingredients include antifoam (e.g. silicone oil, polyglycol, mineral oil, iso-octanol, C 6 to C 12 alcohols, organic phosphates, alkyl lactates and castor oil soaps).
