A procedure for the preparation of phenylaminoethanol derivatives of formula I: ** (See formula) ** where R1 represents a hydrogen atom or a benzyl group; and R2 represents a hydrogen atom or a straight or branched chain alkyl radical containing from 1 to 6 carbon atoms or an arylalkyl radical; whose procedure is to treat a compound of formula II ** (See formula) ** where R1 and R2 have the meaning given above, with formaldehyde or a formaldehyde-forming compound, in the presence of a strong base and an alkali metal borate, and, optionally, when R1 is benzyl, debenzylate to obtain the compound where R1 is hydrogen.
