Abstract

1298284 Preparation of phenylaminoethanol derivatives ALLEN & HANBURYS Ltd 7 May 1971 [2 June 1970] 26523/70 Heading C2C Phenylaminoethanol derivatives of the general formula in which R 1 is a hydrogen atom or a benzyl group, and R 2 is a hydrogen atom or a straight or branched chain alkyl radical containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms or an arylalkyl radical are prepared by treating a compound of the formula with formaldehyde or a formaldehyde yielding compound in the presence of a strong base and an alkali metal borate. Examples describe the preparation of alpha-1-(benzyl-tertiary butylaminomethyl) - 4 - hydroxy - m - xylene - alpha, alpha<SP>3</SP> - 3 - diol and of alpha<SP>1</SP> - (dibenzylaminomethyl) - 4 - hydroxy - m - xylene - alpha<SP>1</SP>, alpha<SP>3</SP>-diol.
