Abstract

1,210,370. Anti-freeze. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 25 July, 1969, No. 37450/69. Heading C4X. An antifreeze composition comprises a watermiscible alcohol, an alkali metal nitrate, an alkali metal metaborate or tetraborate, an alkanolamine phosphate and one or more heterocyclic benzo-compounds of the formula in which the benzene ring optionally contains at least one substituent alkyl radical and B is a CH, CSH or CSM group or a nitrogen atom, M is an alkali metal atom and A is an oxygen or sulphur atom or NH group with the proviso that when A is O or S, B represents only a CSH or CSM group. The alcohol maybe ethylene glycol or a 50/50 by volume mixture of ethylene glycol and methanol. The nitrate and borate may be of sodium or potassium. The alkanolamine phosphate may be triethanolamine phos phate or tri-iso-propylamine phosphate and may be formed in situ. The benzo-compound may be 2-mercaptobenzoxazole, 2-mercaptobenzthiazole, 4-ethyl-2-mercaptobenzthiazole, 2-mercapto-4,5-dimethyl benzthiazole, sodium 2-mercaptobenzthiazole, potassium 2-mercaptobenzthiazole, 2-mercaptobenzimidazole, benztriazole, 4-methylbenztriazole, 5-methylbenztriazole, benzimidazole, 4-methylbenzimidazole. 5-methylbenzimidazole or 5,6-dimethylbenzimidazole. Optional ingredients include sodium or potassium nitrite, anti-foams (many specified) and dyes.
