Abstract

Compounds of the general formula <FORM:1047799/C2/1> (wherein R1 represents a C1- 5 alkyl group and R2 represents a halogen atom) are prepared by converting a compound of the formula <FORM:1047799/C2/2> into an alkali metal derivative and reacting the latter with an alkylating agent in the presence of an inert organic solvent. The compounds of the invention are pharmacologically active and, in particular, 7-chloro-2-methylthio-5-phenyl-3H-1, 4-benzodiazepine is an ataroxic agent.
