Abstract

1,166,898. Repairing heat exchangers. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 10 April, 1968 [21 April, 1967], No. 18490/67. Headings B3A, B3J and B3Q. A method of repairing a leak between a tube and a tube plate of a heat exchanger, or of repairing a puncture or strengthening a weak area in a tube, comprises detonating an explosive charge inside the tube in the region of the tube plate, or inside a metal lining tube covering a puncture &c., while the shell side of the tubes is at superatmospheric pressure, so as to expand the tube or tube lining and seal the leak. The shell side of the heat exchanger may contain a fluid such as water at 120‹ C. A shatterable, non-adherent force transmitting material may be used, and if the heat exchanger is hot the transmission material should have a melting point at least 20‹ C. higher than the temperature of the heat exchanger.
